This is a primer on four easily available, cheap, ultra effective liver cleanse diet supplements that will quickly get your liver working in peak condition and get you feeling better.
The powerful liver cleanse diet supplements I’m talking about are The Whole Lemon/ Olive Oil drink, Plant based Selenium, Taurine and Lecithin granules. These supplements should be your first port of call if you are having liver problems or are living a lifestyle that places your liver under stress.
Aside from discussing these four great liver cleanse diet supplements, I’ll briefly look at some popular bodybuilding supplements and foods that, besides from helping you build muscle and burn fat, will help keep your liver in top shape.

Ok, the four liver cleanse diet supplements…
1) The Whole Lemon/ Olive Oil Drink
This dirt cheap, easy to make, pleasant tasting drink is one of the most powerful liver and lymphatic system detoxification tools available. Some take this drink once a week and others have it more often, even daily.
How to make it:
Combine in a blender the juice of one whole lemon, the rind of half of the lemon, one tablespoon of very high quality olive oil and one glass of water.
Blend on high speed for one minute, strain and drink (if you remove the lemon pips you can drink the whole thing without straining).
Optional: add fresh ginger route and cayenne to raise body temperature and to enhance fat burning.
Mark Konlee, the author of the impressive ‘Immune Restoration Handbook’, feels this liver cleanse diet drink is so powerful that it is the first thing anyone with AIDS, CFIDS, GWS or Cancer should try. Mark writes:
‘I have talked to countless HIV+ persons who have used the drink daily. They have all reported a complete cessation of swollen lymph nodes in 5 to 7 days and neuropathy in about 2 weeks. To date, only one person failed to reduce lymphadenopathy with the whole lemon drink.
In addition, 11 of 13 persons with wasting syndrome have reported a weight gain of 1 to 2 pounds per week. Persons who were of normal weight , or who were overweight when they started, have not reported any weight gain.
One PWA from Ft. Myers, FI, who was 30 pounds underweight, recently wrote that he has gained 21 pounds in 8 weeks, using the whole lemon/ olive drink daily. Two additional persons with neuropathy have reported that 90% of the symptoms were gone within two weeks and completely gone within three.’(1)
I’m not suggesting that because you’re using or have previously used steroids that your liver’s in as bad a condition as the livers of these extremely ill people; I included the above to indicate just how powerful the Whole Lemon/ Olive Oil Drink can be for cleansing the liver and lymphatic system.
Benefits of the Whole Lemon/ Olive Oil Drink:
- If you’re underweight: This liver cleanse diet drink helps you gain lean weight by improving digestion, nutrient absorption and nutrient assimilation. A great way to use this drink to gain weight, whilst improving liver function, is to make a big glass and drink a third or so with each of your main meals.
- If you’re overweight: This liver cleanse diet drink will help you to lose weight by stimulating a more efficient fat metabolism. A fatty liver can no longer burn fat well, and this will cause stubborn fat to form around the mid section – when your liver function gets better again you can expect to see some belly fat melt away.
This liver cleanse diet drink will help you to burn fat by improving liver function because a healthy liver maintains more stable blood sugar levels; as well as this the drink improves nutrient absorption. If you have wildly fluctuating blood sugar levels and/ or are nutrient starved you will receive incorrect hunger signals making you eat more calories than you need.
- The pectin (from the lemon rind) improves Essential fat absorption and is great at removing dangerous heavy metals from the body. High quality fats are greatly important for fat loss because they stimulate the burning of brown fat that helps you to easily shed pounds.
- The olive oil is in this liver cleanse diet drink increases liver production of bile and bile is responsible for emulsifying fats and getting them out of the body rather than being reabsorbed. Bile also helps the liver to get rid of all sorts of waste products and toxins.
The whole lemon/ olive oil liver cleanse diet drink is great for pretty well everyone – it very noticeably improves energy levels, digestion and overall sense of well being.
Apparently the drink is quite tasty if made with grape juice so this might be something to try. If just using just water you can add a healthy sweetener like stevia or a little Splenda to make the drink taste more like standard lemonade.
2) Plant based Selenium
Glutathione is the body’s most important antioxidant and is a very powerful immune stimulant. Cells use glutathione to remove toxins and heavy metals and to process antigen that can protect us from viral infections. Glutathione is critically important to the liver when it comes to eliminating waste.
Selenium and Cysteine are precursors that can effectively increase Glutathione levels in the body. Two forms of selenium, Selenocysteine and L-selenomethionine, are present in Brazil nuts, fish, seafood, brewers yeast, wheat germ, mushrooms and whole grains.
Recommended selenium supplements:
- High selenium yeast – this is extremely cheap (I use Seleno Excell)
- Phytosel (High Selenium Mustard Greens) or SeBroc (Selenium broccoli)
- Brazil nuts – These nuts contain on average 100 mcg per nut depending on the quality of the soil in which they are grown. Try to crack your own.
Dose recommendations:
Mark Konlee suggests a preventative dose of 400mg of natural selenium daily and suggests that a good therapeutic dose range would lie between 800 and 1200 mcg daily.
I take about 600 mg of high selenium yeast daily on top of a fairly high selenium diet. I feel fairly confident that this is a good level for overall health given that 600 mcg is the average consumption level in Japan (where people are pretty healthy) and given that people in Greenland get around 1300 mcg daily without experiencing any toxicity problems.
Toxicity:
Toxicity symptoms include hair falling out and toe and fingernails becoming loose. More advanced side effects are nervousness and stomach problems.
Inorganic selenium supplements, which I do not recommend, may cause side effects at 1200 mcg or more daily. Natural selenium supplements, like the ones I suggest you take, only begin to produce side effects when taken at a dose of over 3,500 mcg a day for a period of time.(2)
Some popular bodybuilding supplements are also great for increasing glutathione levels:
High quality cold processed whey protein
Besides being used by bodybuilders to gain muscle, top quality cold processed whey protein powders such as ImmunePro should be included in a liver cleanse diet. This is primarily because whey protein is excellent for raising intracellular glutathione levels because it is so high in undenatured L cysteine.
Alpha Lipoic acid
Significantly improves insulin sensitivity by allowing muscle and liver cells to take up glucose more efficiently. A good natural source is raw potatoes (1 per day).
N.A.C.
This superior form of l-cysteine has also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and function as an antioxidant. Regular NAC has a half life of one hour so I’d recommend taking a product called NAC Sustain by Jarrow Formulas for maximum results.
L-glutamine
Fantastic for preventing muscle soreness and symptoms of overtraining, great for colon health, can increase growth hormone levels and more…
Silymarin
Not really a bodybuilding supplement but it’s a pretty well known for its liver protecting and healing qualities.
Natural Selenium is the most important of these liver cleanse diet foods/ supplements to take but there’s no reason not to include some of the others in your diet as they’re great for weight training too.
One doctor, Dr. B.M. Berkson, treated three patients in need of liver transplants with a combination of 600 mcg Alpha Lipoic Acid, 400 mcg food based selenium and 900 mg of Silymarin – the patients recovered quickly without needing liver transplants.(3)
3) Taurine
Taurine is a sulphur containing amino acid that is obtained from the diet and/ or manufactured by the body. Taurine is found in all protein foods and, although it is extremely unlikely that you’re deficient, it could potentially be of great benefit when supplemented.
According to Charles Poliquin ‘Taurine is an amino acid that increases insulin sensitivity, increases cell communication, and increases carb metabolism.’'Taurine has also been shown in numerous animal trials to lower blood pressure as well as LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and is being investigated as a treatment option for diabetics.'
Sports nutritionists have become particularly interested in taurine because it can allow muscle cells to hold more water, increasing cell volume, shuttling more nutrients into muscle cells and giving muscles a more pumped look.
Given these benefits it would probably be a good idea for bodybuilders and people interested in seeing their abs to supplement with this. Taurine powder is incredibly cheap and does not cause any side effects when taken at any reasonable dose, so there’s really no downside to taking it.
Dose and Timing:
I generally take taurine when I take my magnesium supplement because some research shows that it aids in magnesium absorption and helps stop the magnesium from causing diarrhea.
A standard dose would be 2 grams three times a day. B6 is important in liver manufacture of taurine, so make sure you are not depleted in this b vitamin.
How Taurine helps your liver:
-Taurine is involved in the production of bile by the liver and, as mentioned earlier, bile is a major way the body gets rid of excess cholesterol and all kinds of toxins.
-Taurine is very important in the detoxification of pesticides and chemicals etc. via the acylation detoxification route.
-Taurine is a powerful antioxidant that can protect the liver from free radical damage that is caused by excessive alcohol consumption and high refined vegetable oil intake.
-Taurine protects against chemical sensitivity, and those with chemical sensitivity have been found to have low taurine levels.
-Taurine is involved in mineral transport across cell membranes and a deficiency can cause electrolyte imbalances that disrupts the liver’s ability to detoxify chemicals.
If you go to Pub Med and type in something like ‘Taurine’ and ‘Liver’ you will see there are a lot of studies showing that taurine supplementation is very effective at protecting the liver and reversing damage.
I first got interested in taurine when I stumbled across an article showing that it can prevent the damage caused by heavy alcohol consumption.(4) There are actually a number of animal studies showing that alcoholic liver damage may be a result of the disruptive effect alcohol has on taurine metabolism – and it looks like supplementation can stop this from happening!
The conclusion of one animal study demonstrated that ‘hepatic disease caused by chronic alcohol consumption can be prevented and reversed by administration of taurine.’(5)
Many rodent studies show taurine dramatically improves cholesterol levels, plasma and liver lipids and diabetic markers.
While we are yet to find out whether or not these results directly translate to humans, I’d recommend making it a part of your liver cleanse diet supplement stack given how cheap it is and that it could help your body composition.
Aside from that, Taurine might yet prove to be the answer to many peoples' prayers by offering a way to drink guilt free - it's definitely worth keeping an eye on this supplement.
4)Lecithin Granules
Lecithin is a phospholipid that is present in all of the cell membranes of the body. Without adequate lecithin your cell membranes cannot function properly and, amongst other things, this means that toxins and waste products cannot be eliminated by the cells.
Like the olive oil in the whole lemon/ olive oil drink, lecithin will increase bile production by the gallbladder and this will aid in the removal of ‘bad’ cholesterol. You can add your lecithin to the blender when you make the whole lemon/ olive oil drink and take these two liver cleanse diet supplements at once.
Lecithin is a highly recommended liver cleanse diet supplement for those who want to lose body fat because it is a powerful emulsifier of fats that helps to remove fatty deposits from the body. Once these fats are emulsified they can be used for fuel or body maintenance, or can be delivered out of the body by the liver leaving the liver once again able to efficiently process fats and carbohydrates.
Lecithin is a liver cleanse diet supplement that has been used in Europe for decades in the treatment of alcoholic liver disease, but there have not been many well designed human studies to test lecithin’s effectiveness.
However, in a recent review of treatment options for alcoholic liver disease it was reported that ‘recent evidence has suggested that phosphatidylcholine may have an effect on alcohol-induced liver damage by decreasing the activities of cytochrome P450 2E1, an oxidative enzyme implicated in alcohol metabolism, and by modulating TNF-á.’(6)
Despite a lack of compelling human evidence to take lecithin there is a lot of animal research indicating it could really benefit people experiencing liver problems:
One controlled rodent study showed that ‘chronic administration of a soybean-derived polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) extract prevents the development of cirrhosis in alcohol-fed baboons.’(7)
The same study found that ‘PPC attenuates early manifestations of alcohol toxicity, at least in part, by improving mitochondrial injury. These beneficial effects of PPC at the initial stages of alcoholic liver injury may prevent or delay the progression to more advanced forms of alcoholic liver disease.’
Note: You can obtain large amounts of soybean-derived polyenylphosphatidylcholine from soy lecithin granules.
If you find difficulty digesting the healthy fats in your meals it might be worth taking a teaspoon or so of lecithin granules with each meal - this should provide lasting relief from this problem.
Dose: 1 to 2 tablespoons of lecithin granules per day – choose the more expensive egg yolk derived lecithin if you have problems with the cheaper soy lecithin granules.
Finally…
The four main liver cleanse diet supplements I talk about are so cheap that it would be silly not to give them a try. If you have to pick just two then definitely go for the Whole Lemon/ Olive oil drink and Plant based selenium as taurine and lecithin are both less well researched liver cleanse diet supplements.
Clearly, not only people with damaged livers, but everybody can use these liver cleanse diet supplements and experience the increases in energy and wellbeing that a healthy liver brings about!
Even little things like buying a better quality whey protein powder could help you to protect your liver, and the higher the quality of the protein the more muscle it will help you to build.
